KM-FX.02 · Stereo width / Mid-Side / zero latency

Width Monkey

Widen without wrecking the middle.

A zero-latency stereo width effect that preserves your Mid while it narrows, widens, and synthesizes Side.

Width Monkey is a Mid/Side stereo width utility that changes Side while leaving Mid untouched, so your mono sum survives every move. Push Width from 0% (mono) through 100% (transparent) up to 200%, with synthetic Side generated from Mid above 100% so even mono sources gain real width without Haas tricks. A Bass Anchor keeps low frequencies centered and mono-safe, Mono Monitor gives instant fold-down checking, and the whole thing is zero-latency with no oversampling, lookahead, or FFT.

Observation / controls

One phenomenon.
Several ways through it.

  • Width 0 to 200% narrows to mono or widens past the original, with Mid preserved throughout
  • Synthetic Side generated from Mid above 100%, frequency-limited so no stereo sub-bass is created
  • Bass Anchor high-passes Side only, keeping low end centered and mono-safe on any system
  • Mono Monitor for instant fold-down checking, plus correlation metering and a vectorscope
  • Zero latency, no oversampling, lookahead, or FFT — transparent at the 100% defaults
Field use / where it lands

Built for the way
you actually work.

Mono sources and synths

Bring flat mono to life — push Width above 100% and Width Monkey synthesizes Side from Mid, no Haas delay or doubling.

Mix and master bus

Check and trim stereo spread with the correlation meter and vectorscope, and use Bass Anchor to keep low frequencies mono-safe.

Narrowing busy loops

Pull Width below 100% to collapse a wash of stereo into focus while the Mid sum stays exactly intact.

Clarification / before you buy

Common questions.

How does Width Monkey keep my mono sum intact?

It works in Mid/Side: only the Side signal is changed, while Mid passes through untouched. Fold-down to mono recovers the original, so the mono sum survives every Width setting.

What happens above 100% width?

Existing Side is boosted up to about +6 dB at 200%, and synthetic Side is progressively generated from Mid. The synthetic path is frequency-limited so it never creates stereo sub-bass.

What is Bass Anchor for?

Bass Anchor applies a smoothed high-pass to the Side only, leaving Mid untouched. It keeps low frequencies centered so your low end stays mono-safe on any playback system.

Does it add latency?

No. Width Monkey reports zero latency with no lookahead, oversampling, or FFT processing, so it is safe on live and tracking paths.

Can it make a mono input stereo?

Yes. In the declared mono-to-stereo configuration, Width Monkey treats mono as Mid and generates Side above 100% so mono material gains real width.

Habitat / system requirements

  • 64-bit Windows host with VST3 support
  • Mono-to-stereo or stereo-to-stereo channel configuration
  • 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz session sample rates
  • No sidechain or MIDI required
